Planet Umi

Planet Umi On Haitus

Posted by Eddie Lee @ April 17, 2008 | Comments (2)

I am rather uncomfortable in saying that the development of Planet Umi must be put on haitus, especially since the game has been taken so well by the online community. But why must I put on hold this beautiful creation of mine? Well, because school is taking over my life and taking over your wife and it’s cutting my time like a knife. Yep, life’s a bitch, and then you die.

But once I have some time, I am planning to implement some new shindigs into Planet Umi which I believe will take the game into a new direction:

  • Enemy creatures will appear during key events and attack your helpless, supple Umis
  • You must build/train Fighter Umis that will counter these enemy attacks
  • Also, I will probably be implementing new background music, even though the Chrono Trigger soundtrack is just..so..awesome. I suppose there are some copyright issues that I do not want to be caught up in. This just comes to show that you cannot always get what you want, because the Man will lay his righteous hand upon your naughty buns.

So until next time, stay cool, bitches.

Go sound the pearly white conch and inform the elders, for Planet Umi v0.5.8 was just released! Special thanks to Lee Choi for the sexy Japanese Umis.

In this version, I’ve added many things:

  • Sound effects are now added to the game
  • Some balancing of the first intro level
  • New level
  • New Umi characters

Now, migrate your silly buns to the Download page and go download Planet Umi for free! If you’ve got some feedback, that would be totally tits.

Zen Planet Umi

So for those who are at all interested in the development of Planet Umi, I am currently working on the next level. I incorporated many themes from Zen Buddhism and Japanese art. Below is a screenshot that I’ve just captured:

Oh yea, I am also schemin’ on implementing sort of fighting/defending capabilities for the Umis.

That’s A Spicy Meat-a-ball!

So I was cruising the interweb and noticed that my game received several (about 200) downloads from Italy.  So I made like Carmen San Diego and discovered that my game was featured on an Italian video game website, how fucking cool is that?

With my robotic mind, I hereby give birth to this brain child. Planet Umi aspires to be something grand and wonderful, but one never knows how well such a game will be taken by the erratic human community. I began my journey of developing this game around the end of March 2008 and have received several delicious emails in support of Planet Umi. Oddly enough, several of the emails were from Mexicans and Italians whose words I barely understood, but loved nonetheless.

Some people may hate you, and claim they love you, don’t let them fool you; however, Planet Umi loves you — it doesn’t care if your fat, socially oppressed or if your skin color is ‘Indian Red’.  This game was developed using Python and Pygame and is my very first video game project. Also, I have decided to make my game open source simply because I like the word “open”. That means that not only is the game free as in ‘free beer’, but it is also free as in ‘free speech’. No, I don’t need no money to mess up my brain and drive me insane.

Anyhow, I started PlanetUmi.com in hopes that it will be a nexus for information about my silly little game, even though most people probably won’t give a flying rats ass. But what I do, I do for love. So sit back, chill like penguins in subzero icebergs and respect the architect, as I begin to build.
